Our dog is apeshit for molasses. It's weird and the only way we know about it is when we make our annual gingerbread cookies he becomes a different animal. He's not usually a beggar, but break out a gingerbread cookie and watch out! He's stuck to you like stink on dog shit.

For his birthday we were joking about how all he would really want would be a gingerbread cookie and then it hit me, there had to be a dog treat that has molasses in it. I found one online and modified it a bit and low and behold, we had a birthday treat for our bestest boy that he could not resist. Bonus? It has pumpkin in it which is great for digestion.

Yes ours ended up looking a little bit like chicken nuggets, but we have some suggestions below on how to make them a little more cute for your little cutie. :)

Good Boy Dog Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin

  • 1/2 cup molasses

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 4 Tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl mix together all of the dry ingredients. In another bowl mix together all of the wet ingredients. Mix the wet ingredients in with the dry ingredients slowly. You can stir with a fork, but it's best to just get your hands in there and mix it up like you are playing with play dough. The consistency is different then cookies you would make for humans.

You can decide if you want to roll them out and cut them into cute shapes or just roll them into balls and press down to flatten with a fork. I will say they really puff up when you bake them so make them smaller than you really want them.

Set the balls or shapes on a lightly greased or parchment covered cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes.

You can store them in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
