Girlie Shows All of Us Need on Our Radar Right Now

Sometimes you just gotta have a great girlie show to watch. Something where people say inappropriate things that you totally get. These are the rare finds and popular shows that have spoken to me recently.

My Life with the Walter Boys: Netflix
A New York teenager loses her family and gets shipped off to rural Colorado to live with her guardian and his absolutely enormous family of boys. There is a love triangle, obviously, because apparently one cute cowboy boy is never enough. Jackie, Cole and Alex are back for Season 3, and things are somehow even messier. It is VERY teen, VERY dramatic, occasionally ridiculous, and I will absolutely keep watching. Season 3 is out now, and Netflix has already renewed it for Season 4.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles: Apple TV+
Elle Fanning gets pregnant by her college professor, drops out of school and finds herself with a baby, a pile of bills and approximately zero plans for what happens next. So naturally, she turns to OnlyFans, with some help from her ex-pro-wrestler dad, played by Nick Offerman. Michelle Pfeiffer is her mom. There’s wrestling, sex work, motherhood, money and a VERY weird alien alter ego. It sounds like it should be terrible. It is actually wildly entertaining.
Sterling Point: Prime Video
Two NYC-raised twins inherit a gorgeous island in Canada from their mysterious grandfather, only to discover there is a half-sister they didn't know about and a LOT of family secrets attached to the property. Add teenage romance, sibling drama, rich-people summer clothes and a ridiculously beautiful lake, and I’m in. I haven't started it yet, but everyone is talking about it, and apparently the outfits alone are worth tuning in for.
Outer Banks: Netflix
If you somehow missed this one, it is basically hot teenagers, gorgeous beaches, treasure hunts, family drama, criminals, motorcycles, boats and people making catastrophically bad decisions while looking extremely good doing it. The Pogues are back for one final season, so prepare yourself for more John B, Sarah Cameron and approximately 700 new life-threatening situations. Season 5 premieres August 20.
The Testaments: Hulu
If you watched The Handmaid’s Tale, you need to watch this. It takes us back to Gilead, but this time we see it through the eyes of two young women growing up inside the regime. One is an elite girl being trained to become the “perfect” Gilead wife, and the other arrives from outside the country and starts asking questions. It has all the creepy, infuriating, “HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?” energy of Handmaid’s, but with a younger generation starting to push back.
If you haven't watched Euphoria, this is your warning that it is not light television. High school kids, drugs, sex, addiction, trauma, complicated relationships and enough glittery makeup to make you question your own life choices. Zendaya is phenomenal, Sydney Sweeney is phenomenal, Jacob Elordi is terrible in exactly the way he is supposed to be, and everyone is making decisions that would have me taking away their phones. Dark, beautiful, completely addictive.
Season 1 was about two strangers who get into a road-rage incident and then become completely unhinged about it. Like, ruin-your-entire-life unhinged. Season 2 is a totally new story with Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny, involving two couples, a country club, blackmail and rich people behaving badly. Basically: what happens when a tiny grudge becomes your entire personality? Season 2 is streaming now.
Off Campus: Prime Video
College hockey players. Hot guys. Romance. Bad decisions. Based on the wildly popular Elle Kennedy books, this is basically Friday Night Lights meets college romance, except everyone is significantly more interested in hooking up. The first season follows Hannah, a music major who hates hockey, and Garrett, the school's star hockey player, who make a deal that predictably becomes something much more complicated. It is cheesy. It is steamy. It knows exactly what it is. I approve.
Every Year After: Prime Video
Two lifelong friends who have basically grown up together keep circling the question of whether they were actually supposed to end up together. It's one of those “right person, wrong time, wrong person, right time, wait...what are we doing?” situations. Lots of history, complicated feelings and the kind of romantic tension that makes you yell at the television. If you like the One Day / Normal People / “are they EVER going to figure this out?” category, add it.
Maxton Hall: Prime Video
A ridiculously wealthy, obnoxious British-ish boarding school boy meets a smart, ambitious scholarship girl and they immediately hate each other. Which means, obviously, they are going to fall madly in love. It is SO CRINGY. The dialogue. The staring. The dramatic running through hallways. The beautiful people. The rich-family nonsense. And yet...I cannot stop watching. You will roll your eyes approximately every 45 seconds and then immediately hit “next episode.” Season 3, the final season, is coming in December.
The Other Bennet Sister: BritBox
If Pride and Prejudice left you wondering, “OK, but what happened to Mary Bennet?”, this is your answer. Mary, the overlooked Bennet sister, finally gets her own story as she leaves the shadow of her more famous sisters and heads into Regency London looking for independence, love and a life of her own. It is period-piece perfection without feeling like homework. I LOVED THIS. If you like The Buccaneers, The Great or anything involving gorgeous dresses, complicated men and questionable romantic decisions, watch it.
📺From The Archives & Still DEFINITELY Worth The Watch!
Everyone is watching this, but... it's SO good. I'm rooting for Conrad more than anyone (including Belly). There is something about the music, the beach, Conrad, it just takes you back to being young and dumb in relationships.
Laid: Peacock
I'm furious this show was canceled for a second season. The creative storyline, the witty one liners, the interpersonal relationships. Eff you Peacock! If you haven't seen this you're missing out. The basic gist is all the guys she's slept with are showing up dead....in order.
Too Much: Netflix
Another one getting rave reviews. Lena Dunham does it again! Girls for the next generation? I think so. There is no perfect characters and all can be extremely relatable if sometimes on the extreme side. The lead actress, Megan Stalter, is chef's kiss.
The Gilded Age: HBO Max
A period piece, soap opera, based on actual people who lived in New York City during the Gilded Age. New money vs. old money. The outfits. The sets take you back. It's fancy, but isn't always classy. I don't know, I love it.
The Great: Hulu
Another period piece, sorry not sorry. This one based on Russian Emperor's wife, Catherine the Great. Elle Fanning shines as the newlywed princess who is naive in the worldly ways. Nicholas Hoult is outstanding as the dumb ass king bumbling his way through a privileged life. You'll fall for him even though you don't want to.
The Buccaneers: Apple TV+
Based on five New York girls who travel to England to find husbands. The girls are rich, so they are highly sought after by poor noblemen. The music is current, the outfits are old, their attitudes on sex, dating and marriage are hilarious. Bad decisions=entertainment. I am very pro The Duke, which may not match up with most.
