This is just one of those things that makes people happy. Myself included and even more so, our dog.

We had walked our dog by a house in our neighborhood that had a little cut out in their fence for their dog and we always loved it. All of us. We would all patiently wait and maybe even call out to see if the dog would come look out his little window in the fence to say hello to our dog. Our dog, Tango, would be so stoked if he came to peek out and we would laugh and love it too! So we decided we wanted to create one for ourselves.

It started simple. Just a little square out of the wood fence that was enough for his little head to peek through, but obviously not enough where he could get out. Luckily the concrete on our fence is the perfect height for him to rest his head on when looks out his little window.

He immediately LOVED it. I mean, spent most of the day peering out from his special spot and saying hello to all the people and pets that walked by. We live in a pretty high traffic walking area so there is always something or someone to see. Honestly, even if there weren't a lot of people walking by I think he would just love to see another area from beyond our fence. See the squirrels on the trees, the neighbors house, and definitely to see when we pull up in our cars. Honestly that is one of the best parts. We park right outside where his little head pops out and it is the best greeting!

It only took about a month before we decided he needed a hat. We did a family vote on what type of hat and thankfully my husband is a pretty good artist. He had a lot of fun coming up with his plan and then painting it on the fence with his little helper's nose keeping track of all of the action.

We knew our dog was doing to love his little window to the world, and that people walking by would find so much joy in it just as we had with our neighbors, but what I didn't expect was how much continuous joy it would bring to us while we are in our backyard. All day long we get to hear people interacting with our dog in the most fun way possible. We get to overhear their surprise when they discover it for the first time and think it is so adorable and take photos and we also get to hear those who have gotten to know our pup on their daily walks and both them, and their furry friends, say hello to him like they would their usual barista. It is fun when we are seen out and about with our dog and he gets recognized like a little celebrity, or when we are doing yard work and people inquire about who the artist is of the hats. There is even a daycare group of about 10 kids that walks by our home every afternoon who all know Tango and get to say hello to him. It truly is endless joy!

I've had people ask if we are worried about someone giving him a treat through his hole in the fence, but honestly we aren't. He's a dog and people are good and this tiny bit of whimsy on our house brings so much happiness to him, to us and to our neighborhood that the good completely outweighs the worry of any bad.
The only thing we have rethought is the second window we created. After loving his little peep hole so much for over a year we decided he needed a second one. That stretch of our fence goes along a pretty long sidewalk so this would give him two vantage points. What we should've foreseen was that he would want to run from one little window to the next all the time. If he sees a dog friend out of one hole, then he runs to say hello to them again at the other hole. It is 90% good, but let's just say we do not have any grass left between those two little windows. He likes it a little TOO much. The worst part of that is that if it has rained or has melting snow, etc. then it is muddy and then HE is muddy and he tracks it in the house. We now have a little cover we put over one of the holes when there is wet weather, but the pattern has been established. He's running and checking out if that little window is open every time anyway. Again, the good far outweighs the bad, but something to consider.

It's funny how this tiny little hole in our fence is truly one of our favorite parts of our home and how many laughs and smiles it has created. I would 100% recommend doing this if it makes sense for your pet and your home. It is a joy spreader for you and your dog.
